Letters to the Editor

Writing a Letter to the Editor is a great way to raise awareness and grab the attention of your politicians.

Don't forget to send your letter to your local publications
in addition to the Herald!

Tips for Writing Your Letter to the Editor

  • Check out our list of newspapers below for where and how to submit your letter

  • Reference or respond to a recent article or letter in that newspaper to increase the chances of publication

  • Respond quickly to media coverage if you can. Timely letters are more likely to be published.

  • Make sure to follow the paper's guidelines (word count, information to include, etc.)

  • You can submit a letter to more than one publication, but you may want to tweak your content based on the audience (local vs. provincial vs. national)

  • Shorter letters generally have a better chance of getting published

  • Make sure to double-check your spelling and grammar

  • Ask a friend to read your letter before you submit it

  • Sometimes you can submit longer pieces by email than through the web portals

  • Don’t try to cover the entire topic in your letter; this is about what matters most to you
