Opposition grows to proposed golf course on West Mabou Beach Provincial Park

On Monday, NDP and Official Opposition Leader Claudia Chender met with Cape Breton residents she says are “concerned and upset” by a proposal from a private company asking the province to turn over protected parkland at West Mabou Beach for a potential golf course development.
“They are not against economic development nor are they opposed to golf courses,” Chender said during a late afternoon interview with the host of CBC Radio’s Mainstreet program. “But I hope every person in Nova Scotia is paying attention, because if this provincial park is for sale to the highest bidder, then they all are.”

‘This isn’t just about West Mabou’
“This isn’t just about West Mabou,” Beaton, the author and activist, is quoted as saying in yesterday’s NDP news release.
“If this government can destroy a protected provincial park by handing it over to billionaire golf developers who are too cheap to buy private land, then anywhere in Nova Scotia is up for grabs,” Beaton said. “The only special interest groups here are corporate ones who are in it for themselves.”
