"Here we go again," said community activist Nadine Hunt as she spoke about the news that Cabot is once again wanting to build an 18-hole links golf course at West Mabou Beach Provincial Park.
According to Cabot's webpage on the plan (mabougolfproject.ca), they are "seeking to lease a portion of the land within the boundaries of the West Mabou Beach Provincial Park. Cabot's goals align with the goals of Nova Scotia's provincial park system: to provide opportunities for outdoor recreational pursuits; to preserve elements of the natural environment: and to provide residents and visitors with opportunities to discover, experience, and enjoy our province's distinctive natural resources."
Cabot says they are committed to being a good neighbour and will support the local community. They promise to not only create jobs, but to improve the park's trails and beach
facilities. They also say they will provide grants, sponsorships, and volunteer hours to local community organizations.
They also maintain they are good stewards of the environment, being certified by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP) for golf, an international environmental education and certification program. But. Hunt isn't convinced. This is the third time to fight Cabot on a golf course in the park, and she doesn't trust the company.
"Cabot is the epitome of greed," she said. "They care about nothing but themselves. They don't care about the environment, or the stress levels they are causing the community, and they don't care about the legislation that's supposed to be protecting it.
In 2023. the Tim Houston government said it would protect the park from development. "Where's their integrity?" wondered Hunt.
