People power saves West Mabou Beach Provincial Park—for the third time

Now, we need to make sure it stays protected.

November 13, 2025

Statement from the Save West Mabou Beach Provincial Park grassroots leaders:

Earlier today, Premier Houston told reporters that Cabot's proposed golf course development in West Mabou Beach Provincial Park will not proceed.

Safe for today... but what about tomorrow?

Asked whether the proposal is completely off the table or if the company could come back to the province with a revised proposal, Houston didn't rule it out, saying, "I don't know what they're going to do. I just know where we're at today."

We've been here before

We celebrated in 2023 - the last time Cabot’s attempt to lease West Mabou Beach Provincial Park was rejected—but then they tried again, two years later. We cannot allow our parks and protected areas to be needlessly and repeatedly threatened. We cannot allow our communities to be torn apart.

This won't ever truly be over until the government finally strengthens the Provincial Parks Act to ensure this will never happen again.

Which of our parks will be next?

While things are looking up for West Mabou Beach Provincial Park, we can't forget that Natural Resources Minister, Kim Masland, said this government is willing to consider development proposals in other parks and protected areas.

Until all of our provincial parks are safe, none of them are.

Let the government know that you're counting on them to update and strengthen the Provincial Parks Act to keep our parks safe from delisting and inappropriate development.

Minister Masland: mindnr@novascotia.ca

Inverness MLA Kyle MacQuarrie: mla@kylemacquarrie.ca

Together, we have power, and we can use it to make sure our provincial parks are protected in perpetuity.
