Nova Scotia announces protection of 1,267 hectares, but no word on West Mabou Beach Provincial Park

Announcement dubbed ‘a cynical move’ comes as Houston government hints that all protected lands are open for development

The provincial government has designated 1,267 more hectares of land in 16 parks and protected areas across Nova Scotia, according to a press release issued today by Nova Scotia’s Department of Environment and Climate Change.


...Curious timing

The announcement about the new protected lands comes when the provincial government is deeply embroiled in controversy over its apparent decisions to back away from more and permanent protection of lands in Nova Scotia.

As the Examiner reported here, the province has breached the conditions of the $28.5 million nature agreement it signed in 2023 with the federal government.

There is also intense and growing public concern about the fate of the West Mabou Beach Provincial Park in Cape Breton, where Cabot Golf wants to put a third golf course – its third attempt to do so.


‘We will listen’ … to developers


As Jennifer Henderson reported, after a cabinet meeting last Thursday reporters asked Premier Tim Houston if he would open parklands protected under provincial legislation to developers.


Houston replied, “We will listen to them. If any company comes to Nova Scotia and says they have an idea, I think it would be irresponsible to not listen. So we’ll listen.
