Reaction to province's willingness to consider developments in protected area

CBC Radio

Information Morning Nova Scotia - November 6, 2025 Listen online here

Nova Scotia promised to protect 20 percent of its land and water by 2030. The Ecology Action Centre's wilderness coordinator is questioning that commitment, and raising the alarm, now that the province says it will consider protected areas for development.

"Development is exactly what legally protected areas are protected from. The Minister doesn't seem to understand that. If the government were to allow Cabot to have what it wants and take that site for its use, it would cross a line that's never been crossed before. It would be the first time a government unprotected land for an economic actor who wants to develop it. If this place is unprotected, then all of our parks and protected areas are on the chopping block and vulnerable." - Senior Wilderness Coordinator, Raymond Plourde
