Letter to the Editor by Olga Everson & Xavier Rankin
The Oran - Nov. 4, 2025
Dear Editor,
This is in response to the letter to the editor A Homegrown Alternative to the West Mabou Beach Golf Course. The writer's ideas about locally driven, sustainable initiatives are deeply reflective of what makes Mabou unique a place where community, culture, heritage and respect for the land go hand in hand.
As president of the Mabou and District Community Development Association (MDCDA), together with the chair of the Mabou Waterfront Development Committee, we wanted to take this opportunity to highlight that much of what was proposed in that letter is very much in motion through the Mabou Waterfront Development Project — a volunteer, community-led initiative that was presented to the community in October 2024 and where we were given the support of the community to proceed with the project.
Over the past two years, the Waterfront Development Committee has been working steadily to bring the vision for the waterfront to life. The detailed master design plan envisions a vibrant and welcoming waterfront. The plan includes a market space for artisan shops, food spaces, a stage and gathering area for music and cultural events. recreational spaces, green areas, and a marina for docking for small and larger craft all celebrating our Scottish, Mi'kmaq, Acadian, Dutch, Irish cultures while supporting local business, creating jobs and enhancing tourism.
While much of this foundational work has been happening quietly through planning, government consultations. seeking funding opportunities we recognize that it's been some time since the public has received an update. The recent letter is a timely reminder that communication is key.
The Committee is currently preparing for the next phase of the project. We're awaiting the opening of two key grant opportunities that align closely with our development goals. At the same time, a capital fundraising committee has been formed and will soon launch a capital campaign to re-introduce the project to the community.
As always, the success of this project depends on community energy and collaboration. The vision is one of balance preserving the beauty of our natural environment while creating a place that reflects who we are and provides opportunities for future generations. We look forward to sharing more information stay tuned!
Olga Everson, president
Xavier Rankin, chair Mabou Waterfront Development Committee
