Open for exploitation

Letter to the Editor by Doug Lowry

The Oran - Nov. 4, 2025

Dear Editor,

On October 30, 2025, Minister of Natural Resources, Kim Masland, declared that: We are open for exploitation in Nova Scotia - sorry, I mean, what she actually said was, “We are open for business in Nova Scotia.” Premier Houston added that “we must be open-minded

and listen to opportunities if there’s maybe a better use for land.” The land that the premier is referring to is any and all protected public lands in the province, including West Mabou Beach Provincial Park.

Premier Houston also implied that a golf course development at the provincial park, through the creation of both physical and economic barriers to access, “might get more people involved and enjoying Nova Scotia.” The logic in this is, well, illogical, considering that the park is currently accessible to all at no cost and a round of golf is several hundred dollars. But this has not stopped Premier Houston and his government from doing all that it can to try to spin this proposal - that is, when they aren’t deliberately trying to conceal its existence - as  something that is good for Nova Scotians. It is turning out that the premier and his cabinet are perhaps Cabot’s most vocal lobbyists even if their narrative is pure fiction and is proving unconvincing to Nova Scotians.

Local MLA, Kyle MacQuarrie, continues to  hide in the shadows claiming that he knows nothing and has nothing to say about this topic.
