Dear Editor,
While I have the privilege of knowing some wonderful people in Mabou, I am not a resident of the community, nor do I have any substantial ties to the area. What I am is a fellow Nova Scotian, concerned about the ongoing threats against the beautiful West Mabou Beach provincial park.
Provincial parks are essential to protect the Nova Scotia landscape and our cultural heritage, and to provide access to everyone to enjoy these resources. One only needs to visit another Canadian province to understand these parks are an important showcase that display how each area is unique and valuable to the country as a whole. They are vital to the tourism industry, for without them our province would lack its own personality.
It is a very slippery slope when the provincial government starts caving to private corporations and handing over our protected areas. If this happens in Mabou, it can continue to happen in other places as well. And each time it does, it dilutes the culture of our province.
While representatives of Cabot may argue the financial benefits of a golf course in the area, there is nothing stopping them from purchasing private land. Their reasoning is not what lies at the heart of the issue. This is about preserving our heritage for future generations and not letting companies rob our province's assets for private gain. Once places like this are sold out, we all lose.
Voters all over the province are watching to see what this current government will do.
Watching to see if the Conservative Party will protect the interests of the people, or sell out to the highest bidder.
